6 Small Makeup Tricks That Give Major Results
As we've seen with the contour craze, applying product in the right places (and in the right way) has the power to completely manipulate your features and alter the appearance of your face. For example, if you want to chisel a supermodel bone structure, a bit of darker contour on your cheekbones and along your jawline will do the trick.
Want to make your face appear less narrow? Highlighting along the cheekbones is the answer. Makeup can be used to create the appearance of larger eyes, fuller lips, a slimmer nose, and so much more. And while we're all about owning what you've got, sometimes a bit of makeup magic can help you feel like your best self. We asked six makeup artist tips to sculpt, slim and define your face.
Apply your highlighter in all the right places. To make your eyes really pop, highlight the inner corner, the center of the lid, and underneath the brow bone. For extra oomph, use a natural, skin-colored eyeliner on your waterline; white tends to translate into costume makeup, so be sure to stick to a skin tone. The highlight-waterline combo will really open up tired eyes and make you look wide awake.
If your eyes are closer together, draw and connect your eyeliner out from the outer corners. This technique works like arrows, drawing your eyes outward. For hooded eyes, try a thick colored liner on top to make a statement. Almond eyes love a dramatic winged liner. If you have small eyes, use the nude waterline trick paired with soft sweeps of liner on the top and bottom lash lines to open them up.
For the plumpest lips, always start with an exfoliator. Creating a smooth canvas for application is one of the most common running themes in makeup, and lips are no exception. Add highlighter to the top of your Cupid’s bow to accentuate your upper ridge. When it comes to lip liner and overdrawing your lips, use a shade that’s a close match to your actual lip tone—if you have to choose, go for darker instead of lighter.
Charlotte Tilbury’s (£16) in Pillow Talk is the perfect product to add to your arsenal to reshape and resize your lips. It’s seriously mind-blowing what the right lip liner can do. I like to use this product on its own to overdraw and fill in my lips, and then I just throw a dab of lip balm on top to create the illusion that I was born this way.
Here’s another makeup-artist secret: Add a dab of highlighter or concealer to the center of your lips for an added pop. When you finish your lip, sweep concealer around the outer corners to accentuate and define your pout. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to fake fuller lips.
Want to accentuate your cheekbones but don’t want to go all-out contour? Add a pat of clear lip gloss or lip balm to the tops of your cheeks to catch the light. This technique uses the same theory as contour, where lighter or highlighted areas create the illusion of protrusion (rhyme not intended). Or, why not try strobing?
Don’t forget the halo method for bronzing to slim your face and warm your features. Dusting bronzer along your jawline and pulling the color down onto the neck will also create a slimming effect and warm up your features—no needles or knives required. Or, contour your nose—yes, nose—by taking a small fluffy brush and dusting bronzer down either side of your bridge for an instant slimming effect.
