STYLE ADVICE

STYLE ADVICE

Away from the comfort blanket of our coats and jeans, summer dressing can be tricky. Here we reveal how to avoid putting a fashion foot wrong, with help from, M&S’s styling team

Lady in black

“You don’t have to ditch your black sweater just because it’s summer,” says stylist Ashley. “Black isn’t usually a shade we associate with the summer months but designer brands such as Michael Kors and Stella McCartney heavily featured the ebony hue this SS18,” she says.

“Make sure to transform darker colours with items that scream summer, such as an easy-breezy white skirt, colour-pop accessories or neutral tones. Fabric choice also plays a vital role when wearing black during the warmer months – think light linen, seersucker or chiffon to keep you cool.

“The best thing about this trend is that you can wear your versatile black garments all year round.”

Suit up for summer

If you buy one summer trend this year, make it the suit. Ideal for wearing as separates, a lightweight tailored jacket and trousers also make a big statement when worn together.

Junior stylist Katie says, “Tailored trouser suits ruled the spring summer 2018 catwalks and took power dressing to a whole new level. Team with trainers and a slogan tee for off-duty days or embrace a classic style with a heritage check print and court heels. Feeling daring? Choose a sharp suit in a bold colour.”

Flower power

Florals are definitely not old-fashioned this summer, as senior stylist Laura explains.

“Inspired by the likes of Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana and Erdem, floral maxi dresses are having quite a moment. Dress yours down with trainers and a denim jacket for day, try gold heels and lashings of gold jewellery in the evening, or go for an altogether more grungy look and pair with biker boots and a leather jacket. It’s definitely one of the most versatile styles around.”

Great style, on the double

Double-breasted blazers are a wardrobe must-have all year round, but in summer they are great for chucking on over skimpy summer clothes.

Senior dolce and gabbana boys summer wear 2018 stylist Jodie says, “Whether you team yours with blue jeans and a tee for relaxed weekends, or layer it over a crisp white shirt and smart tailored trousers at work, a double-breasted blazer will always look chic and well put together. I recommend wearing it open and even sizing up for a cool and figure-flattering finish.”

Spot on style

Making a strong defence for the print of the season are polka dots, which were all over the catwalks.

“Polka dots prevail for summer,” says senior stylist Jamie. “From flocked spots and romantic ruffles at Rodarte, to twill pyjama styles at Ganni, and clashing with geometric stripes for maximum impact at Silvia Tcherassi, this print is leaving the rule book behind.

“Versatility and elegance play a key part – style with chunky knits and a kitten heel boot or pare back with a denim jacket, trainers and a bold red lip for a classic look with added character.”

The short answer

Shorts aren’t just for on the beach – they also make a cool look at home.

“The key to making shorts city suitable for a day in the office is to ensure you keep the rest of your outfit chic and polished,” says senior stylist Chloe.

“Add a silk shirt and blazer to let your legs do all the talking, keeping the look demure yet feminine. Pair with a nude heel to elongate your legs and keep the accessories minimal – a belt will show off your waist. A delicate necklace would look great too.”
