Aged Whiskey...In a Day?
Now Playing: Know your spirits: Whisky
It is said that stories are the communal currency of humanity, and Mumbai‘s newest addition, has committed to keeping the art of storytelling alive with their eclectic fare. Welcome to Goyaa – a labour of love built on the shared experiences of sharing experiences. Opened on July 14, 2019, it provides an exclusive platform to those who believe in the magic of creating bonds while keeping food & drinks merely as connecting elements.
Proprietors Siddharth Somaiya and Mariki Sayles both started working in the Michelin-driven madness at some of Manhattan’s top restaurants – Lincoln and Le Bernardin respectively. A huge leap of faith and several trans-Atlantic flights later, they found themselves setting up a shop in an offbeat location in South Bombay.
The food, with its concise format and decidedly Asian nuances, is a reflection of today’s urban dweller: modern, bold, adventurous, and multi-dimensional. Small, shareable plates filled with “wholesome food” encourage a social-dining experience and invoke a casual atmosphere. One can expect meats from around the world; breads, sauces and tofu made from scratch. “Embarking on a venture of this scale is never easy,” reveals Somaiya, “but I can’t remember happier times than those spent with friends over good food and drinks. My vision for Goyaa is to be a place where you can do just that, and keep coming back.” Expect his signature Bao’s, Green-Lipped Mussels, Sweet & Sour Eggplant and lots more.
Goyaa’s cocktail menu, crafted by Mariki, is a manifestation of her journey to the Maximum City via her 3-Michelin pedigree in The Big Apple. The bar shines with original creations such as Shango Sling, Temple Of The Jaguar, Tombstone Bullets & No Sugar Tonight. In addition, the bar program features bitters, vermouth, and tinctures — all made in-house.
Nestled within a century-old mill in Byculla, Goyaa boasts of a color palate that plays in tones of grey and natural materials of wood and stone. To add to the charm, the ivy-clad walls and a silence that belies Goyaa’s surroundings creates a space that relaxes and soothes.
The interiors are reminiscent of a trendy bar crossed with an amphitheater. A multi-level seating rises from behind the bar — intended as a throwback to Siddharth’s first venture, The BaoHaus Co., where patrons would sit on the stairs outside his modest delivery kitchen to devour the signature steam buns. The lofty ceiling height adds to the magnificence and an open kitchen with counter seating engages the diner in the artistry of cooking.
This enchanting space speaks to you in more ways than one. Invoking hours of uninterrupted conversation, laughs and sharing plates. Trust Goyaa to be a part of building all those cherished memories.
