Roberto Cavalli Has No Interest In Dressing Anyone For The Oscars
The Italian designer says he hates the influence celebrities have on the fashion industry
While most designers are fighting over who gets to dress Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita N’yongo for the Oscars this year, Roberto Cavalli has happily recused himself from the battle.
In fact, the 73-year-old Italian designer won’t be dressing anyone for Hollywood’s biggest red carpet event. And he couldn’t care less.
‘I wish fashion were less tied to communication and stars,’ he told WWD before his Just Cavalli show yesterday. ‘I can’t understand all these fashion companies spending millions to dress celebrities. And the fault is also that of the media that fuel this frenzy.’
Most other design houses are more than happy to get A-list celebrities in their clothes. For example, Versace just enlisted Lady Gaga for its ad campaigns. But Cavalli will not be following suit.
‘I don’t care to spend millions to dress Lady Gaga so that she can say she is wearing my clothes,’ he said. ‘That’s why I have pulled out of the Oscars circuit and I go to the Grammys. It’s different there.’
Just because he doesn’t love celebrities, doesn’t mean they don’t love him. Stars such as Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Miley Cyrus are all big fans of his designs. Too bad the feeling isn’t mutual.
