Should You Really Dye Your Eyebrows? A Celebrity Stylist Weighs In
There are a million things to consider when dying your hair, especially when going for a color that’s a bold departure from your natural hue. Questions that are bound to run through your head include: What if I hate it? What if it damages my hair? How unfortunate will my root situation get, and how will I address it? And once you do decide to color your hair, you’ll likely start asking yourself this:Should I dye my eyebrows?
According to colorist Derek Loudenof Los Angeles’s Andy Lecompte Salon, it depends. Louden, who trained underMadonna‘s stylistSteven Tappand has also beautified Madge’s locks, offers these suggestions, based on the color you were born with and the one you’re after.
When going from brunette to natural blonde.
“Natural or darker brows works best,” Louden says, dispelling the notion that dyeing your brows is always a must when lightening brown hair. “It makes [the look] more dramatic and makes the blonde pop more,” he adds.
When going platinum.
According to Louden, this one really depends on your desired look. Both dark and light brows complement bleached hair, but if you choose the latter, “stick to a golden or cool blonde shade,” he says; platinum hair is dramatic enough to stand out on its own.
When going from black to red or black to natural blonde.
“Soften the brows,” Louden says, adding that they don’t need to match your new color exactly, but should be in the same tone family.
If you do decide to take the brow-coloring plunge, Louden advises checking for skin sensitivity first (your colorist can do this by putting a small drop of dye on your hand) and making sure you have a good color blocker for the area around your brows. “Keep in mind that [it won’t be] permanent and your brows will grow back to natural in about four weeks,” he says.
